Suffering #6: Navigating the War Zone
This lesson shifts the focus from the theological models of providence to the practical necessity of correctly diagnosing the root causes of our suffering. The teacher warns that just as a medical doctor can commit malpractice by misdiagnosing a severe illness, Christians can commit "spiritual malpractice" by misidentifying the source of someone's pain. Like Job's friends, who wrongly assumed his demonic attack was due to moral corruption, believers must learn to correctly identify suffering so they do not become "miserable comforters" who accidentally multiply someone's grief.
The Six Varieties of Suffering The lesson categorizes suffering into six distinct types, outlining whether each is God's will and prescribing a biblical response:
Moral Evil: This suffering is caused by the sinful choices of other human beings, such as Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers or someone facing false accusations. God does not ordain this sin, though He can use it for good.
Natural Evil: This type of suffering results simply from living in a fallen, broken world where physical corruption exists, causing realities like severe viruses, cancer, or a person being born blind. It is not God's original design, but He can use it as an opportunity for His glory to be revealed.
Persecution: This is suffering willingly endured for the sake of righteousness and obedience to God, such as losing a job because you refuse to lie for your boss. While God does not desire for His children to be attacked, His will in the persecution is to strengthen believers so they remain faithful
