Spiritual Warfare #7: Continuum of Influence and Power Encounter
The Continuum of Demonic InfluenceThe speaker explains that demonic influence operates on a spectrum or "continuum".
External Oppression: At the lowest end of the spectrum is the standard, everyday oppression that all people experience simply by living in a fallen world. This includes the enemy "hindering" plans or firing "flaming darts" of temptation and ungodly cultural influence.
Total Domination (Possession): At the extreme opposite end of the spectrum is total domination or possession. In these cases, the demonic entity takes complete ownership of a person, overriding their personal will entirely (as seen with the Demoniac of Gadara in the Bible).
Can a Believer be Possessed?A crucial point of the lesson is addressing the unbiblical fear that a Christian can become demon-possessed. The speaker emphatically states that a believer cannot be possessed. Relying on Colossians 1:13, the lesson reminds the class that Christians have been completely transferred from the dominion of darkness into the kingdom of Jesus. Because Jesus legally owns the "house" of a believer's life and the Holy Spirit resides there, an enemy cannot take ownership.
Footholds and SquattersWhile believers cannot be possessed, they can still experience severe oppression if they give the enemy a "foothold". When believers entertain their flesh or harbor unconfessed sin (like anger or bitterness), it opens a door for the enemy to gain ground and influence their actions. The speaker compares the enemy in this situation to a squatter or a subletter operating on a "false lease". The squatter will lie and claim ownership, making the believer feel powerless, but the believer actually retains the full authority of Christ to kick the squatter out.
Power Encounters vs. Truth EncountersTo evict this spiritual squatter, the speaker warns against popular, theatrical "power encounters." These involve directly confronting, yelling at, or interviewing the demon to find out its plans. Because Satan is the father of lies, interviewing a demon only invites more deception.
Instead, believers must use a "Truth Encounter". The blueprint for a truth encounter involves:
Reading the Word Out Loud: The oppressed person (not just the pastor or a friend) must open the Bible and read verses like Colossians 1:13 out loud to remind themselves and the enemy of their true identity in Christ.
Repentance: The believer must explicitly repent to God for the specific sin that opened the door and allowed the foothold in the first place.
Renouncing and Evicting: The believer must audibly renounce the enemy's lies and use their God-given authority in Jesus' name to command the squatter to leave.
Filling the House: Once the enemy is evicted, the believer must immediately fill that space with "Jesusy stuff"—engaging in worship, prayer, reading Scripture, and gathering with the church family so the enemy cannot return to an empty house.
