Restless Redeemer, Restful Redemption

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor Silas

In the darkness of the Book of Judges, a remarkable light begins to shine through the story of Ruth—a light that illuminates what the Hebrew Scriptures call 'chesed love.' This isn't ordinary affection; it's a radical, loyal, covenant-keeping love that commits to another person's flourishing regardless of personal cost. When Ruth declares to Naomi that she will never leave her, choosing Naomi's God as her own, she lights a lamp in pitch-black times. What unfolds in Ruth chapter 3 is a breathtaking demonstration of this sacrificial love from multiple directions. We see Naomi, emerging from her bitterness, seeking security for Ruth. We witness Ruth's vulnerable obedience as she approaches Boaz on the threshing floor—a risky plan that could have ended disastrously. And we encounter Boaz, a man of noble character who protects Ruth physically, socially, and spiritually, promising to be her kinsman redeemer. The beauty of this narrative lies in how it foreshadows the ultimate Kinsman Redeemer—Jesus Christ. Just as Boaz took on restlessness so Ruth and Naomi could find rest, Jesus absorbed our sin, rejection, and spiritual debt to give us eternal peace. The chesed love we see in Ruth's story isn't just ancient history; it's the very heartbeat of the gospel, calling us to both receive God's loyal love and extend it to others in our broken world.
