What if the most radical social revolution in history was hiding in plain sight inside a few verses about marriage, family, and work? In this exploration of Colossians 3 and 4, we dive into what scholars call the household code, and discover that Paul was not simply reinforcing the status quo of his day. He was detonating it from the inside. In the Roman world, the father of the household held absolute power over wife, children, and servants, including the power of life and death. Paul walks into that world and does something no one had done before: he addresses the powerless first. Wives, children, and servants are spoken to directly, as morally responsible human beings of full worth and dignity, before a single word is directed at the one holding all the authority. The spiritual lesson here is profound. The cosmic lordship of Christ, the truth that all believers are equally seated with him, is not meant to stay in the realm of theology. It is meant to invade our kitchens, our bedrooms, our workplaces, and our public lives. The call to husbands to love with self-sacrificial agape love, to fathers not to crush the spirits of their children, and to workers to labor wholeheartedly as unto the Lord, these are not mild suggestions. They are a complete reordering of power, one that ultimately helped dismantle an empire. The question for us is whether we are willing to let Christ rewrite the code in every corner of our own lives.
